RR-S-550 is a federal specification that covers mechanical sockets for mechanical wire ropes used in rigging, hoisting, towing, stowage, excavating, logging, and slump removing equipment, and marine applications.

Muncy Exceptions to RR-S-550

Spelter Sockets

General Exception Paragraph

Muncy's spelter sockets are dimensionally compliant with RR-S-550. Muncy 1-1/2" and smaller Rope Sockets are a grooveless design for use with polyester resin or zinc socketing compounds. Muncy 1-5/8" and larger Rope Sockets are a grooved design that meet the design requirements of Federal Specifications RR-S-550.

Specific Exceptions by Section

3.2.1: Muncy's spelter sockets are made of a carbon steel composition equivalent in function and strength to the requirements of this section.

3.3.1: All of Muncy's spelter sockets are a cast steel design.

3.3.1.1: Muncy spelter sockets are Class 1. Class 2 is available upon request.

Table I, Note 1: Tolerances for castings are per SFSA 2000.

4.3: First article inspections are completed by Muncy personnel per Muncy standards. Any additional inspections or testing can be quoted upon request.

4.3.3: Sample size is per Muncy standards.

4.3.3.1: Chemical analysis sampling is not included as a standard.

4.4.2: Inspection procedures and lot sizes are per Muncy standards.
